Three Reasons the Internet Could Crash at This Moment

Before the internet was a worldwide entertainment system, it was developed to be a communication system that could survive nuclear war.  However, they didn’t realize exactly what this monster would become, and as we speak, the whole thing is resting on a pretty shaky foundation. So shaky, in fact, that it could collapse at any moment. Here’s why:

1. The internet is a series of cables that aren’t really that well protected. The largest of them could be destroyed by an earthquake.

2. Our Buddy Leo. You don’t know Leo Kuvayev personally, but he’s sent you a lot of emails. He’s one of the most influential figures of the spam industry. He’s also responsible for the way spammers work today, believe it or not. He’s a wanted felon, but despite his criminal record he remains carefree and disgustingly wealthy. He lives in exile, dwelling either in Tahiti or Finland.

3. Zombified Robots are likely to take over the world. Nearly everyone uses the internet. Most people above the age of twelve own an active cellular device as well as many other electronics(ipods, webcams, etc). Electronics are taking control over our lives. They are also on the brink of becoming pervasive.  Let’s ponder this a bit. When Facebook crashes for an hour, chaos. When AT&T crashes in one state, chaos. Think about the grip the government would have on us if the entire internet went down. We would have to rely on them for almost every form of communication.

So cherish the time you spend watching viral videos, or even making a transfer from your checking account, because the internet could go down at any minute.

Unplug, My Child!

In a recent talk, Mark Zuckerberg stated that using Facebook can be beneficial and educational for children under the age of 13. He said that Facebook will soon be open to everybody.

People are getting a little riled up by this, and I’m left wondering, why? Aren’t ten year olds already plugged into the internet? From a business viewpoint Mr Z is just making a rational decision. People will lie about their age on every social networking site out there, and he just realizes that it’s futile to prevent children from making a Facebook.

This being said, it is saddening for anyone of Mr. Zuckerberg’s stature to claim that Facebook is “educational.” Beneficial, maybe (in a dreadfully time-consuming way), but by no means educational. Unless constant communication, infinite “LOL’s” and an intense addiction to Farmville can be deemed educational.

Smile, You’re On Camera

Everyone Googles themselves occasionally, right? I mean, it’s a fantastic way to learn some interesting facts about yourself. It’s just something people find themselves compulsively doing from time to time. Make sure that your Twitter page is the first to show up under your name. But what most people don’t expect is to find a picture of yourself smoking a cigarette in total solitude.

It wasn’t common knowledge amongst Kevin Bankston’s friends, family and associates that he was still smoking. But Google knew. He was a bit flustered when he came across a picture of him taking a secret cigarette break taken by Google’s Street Viewer. As a matter of fact, a Google search for “Kevin Bankston Smokes” reveals more than 20,000 links.

Coincidentally enough, Bankston is one of the most avid advocates for digital privacy. As the staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, one of Kevin’s main jobs is to monitor how technology effects citizens’ Rights to Privacy. It’s not just Google, either. Not long ago, Kevin had had the same experience with Amazon’s now disabled A9.com Map Service.

We are walking down a yellow brick road decorated with wires and cameras and microphones, people. I can not put into words how much this scares me.
